De Anza Trail – Tubac
In southern Arizona, the 1,200-mile Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail traces the banks of the Santa Cruz River. About four miles of walking trails follow the river between the artsy enclave of Tubac to the north and the Tumacocori National Historic Site to the south. This is a rare stretch of river that offers perennial surface water making it a regular draw for all kinds of wildlife. You can explore the lush riparian corridor beginning at two areas. Right outside Tubac, visit the de Anza Trailhead at the Presidio just east of town. Or start at the Tumacacori National Park (admission fee) which provides easy access to the riparian area as well as plenty of living history that’s well worth a visit. This area is also a great area for fall raptor migration.
