North Mountain Park and Visitor Center

Part of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, the North Mountain Recreation Area is a popular urban escape in the middle of the sprawling Phoenix metropolitan area. With plenty of easy trails, North Mountain is a terrific place to see many Sonoran Desert species, such as Greater Roadrunner, Cactus Wren, Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, and Costa’s Hummingbird. Summer months can be very hot here as there’s not much shade. The Visitor Center, which has limited hours, has terrific displays capturing the rich history of the area.
