Roper Lake State Park
Located about eight miles south of Safford, AZ, this state park’s namesake is a 32-acre lake. As the largest body of water in the region, Roper Lake is a huge draw for birds and other wildlife. Ring-billed and Bonaparte’s gulls are occasionally spotted here as are a few species of terns (Forster’s, black, and least). Common mergansers and several duck species are common visitors. The state park also offers several amenities including camping, cabins, and 5 miles of hiking trails.
Admission to Roper Lake also includes admission to nearby Dankworth Pond, another great birding location with hiking trails.
